Shirley Plantation - Wednesday 13th

The Shirley plantation, on the James River,  has been in the Hill/Carter family for 11 generations, the last generation stills lives in the house, leaving the first floor available to the public. The Great House was built in 1723 and reflects the balance and symmetry favored by the English during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods. Additional buildings  included: Dovecote, Ice House, Kitchen, Laundry, Pump House, Root Cellar, Smokehouse, Stable, and Store House. At one time there also were 2 Flankers which had 4 Bed Chambers in each one for guests, on either side of the Great House.
